— January Carson City School Board Meeting discusses policy changes, early release dates. 6 p.m. The January Carson City School Board Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 22 beginning at 6 p.m. A board workshop will run from 6-7 p.m. regarding a progress update for the Performance Plans related to the Nevada School Performance Framework for Pioneer High School. The School Board Meeting will be called to order at 7 p.m. 1402 West King Street, Carson City.

— The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, "Photo Finished," at the Community Development Building (the Brick), 108 E. Proctor Street, Carson City. Eleven artists from Carson High School have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public from January 14 to March 31, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. The artists are all students in Photography Instructor Kara Ferrin’s Advanced Photo class.

— Pets of the Homeless fundraiser in downtown Carson City. This time of year, the Nevada state capital is filled with traditions. One that has grown especially endearing to the Carson City community is the annual Pets of the Homeless fundraiser presented by Carpa Nevada, LLC and Downtown Coin. Chef Don Pepe Paz, "The Paella King" and owner of Carpa Nevada, is once again donating the profits made from sales of his fine Portuguese olive oils and balsamic vinegar to Pets of the Homeless, a Carson City-based 501(c)3 registered non-profit with a nationwide outreach. The fundraising sale began Nov. 1 and runs through Jan. 31, 2019. Olive oil and balsamic vinegar products can be purchased individually or by the case at Downtown Coin, 111 W. Telegraph in downtown Carson City. Funds for Pets of the Homeless go directly to pay for the veterinary, nutritional and other care of pets of homeless individuals across the country.

— Clothing and food collection drive underway for Carson City homeless. Now that the holiday season is over many people forget about the great need the homeless face everyday here in Carson City. With some of the coldest weather still ahead of us lets do what we can to help those suffering from homelessness. I'm collecting items for the Do Drop In Center and the homeless of Carson City. Some of the items needed are: Warm socks, Jackets, gloves, sleeping bags, blankets, hats, camping gear, tarps, and hygiene products. We are also collecting canned goods, nutritional snacks, hot chocolate, oatmeal, individual servings of juice as well as coffee, tea and soup that can be used at the center. Volunteers and money donations to keep the Do Drop In doors open are always needed. Donations can be dropped off at Grocery Outlet 1831 N Carson St., Rustically Divine 410 N Carson St. Items will be collected now through March. — Nevada Artists Association presents New Year's Show at BAC. 10 a.m. The Nevada Artists Association presents The New Year's Show. The featured artists wall at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City will also be presenting the works of Dick Carr and Reta Hanks. These shows are free and open to the public. The NAA Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located on the campus of the Brewery Arts Center at 449 W. King Street in Carson City. — Art exhibit 'Korea '76' featured at the Carson City Community Center's Sierra Room. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Korea ’76" with work by artists Eugene Rolfe and Gig Depio in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public now through Feb. 28, 2019. Note: the Sierra Room is closed for renovation from Jan. 18 to Feb. 6.

— Dayton High School athletic registration open for spring sports. Dayton High School Spring sports registration for baseball, softball, field and track, boys golf has begun. Registrations must be complete by 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14. Current fall and winter athletes must register as well for a spring sport if they are participating. — Statewide presentations on radon safety. January is National Radon Action Month, and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans from Jan. 2 through Feb. 28. Radon test kits are available at Cooperative Extension offices and partnering locations, as well as at presentations, statewide. Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It comes from the ground and can accumulate in homes, raising the risk of lung cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates 21,000 Americans die each year from radon-caused lung cancer, killing more people than secondhand smoke, drunk driving and house fires.For more information, call the Radon Hotline at 1-888-RADON10 (1-888-723-6610) or visit the Nevada Radon Education Program website at www.RadonNV.com. — The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, Americana with Cadmium Orange, by artist Gig Depio at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Depio is an artist and an advocate for public art in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was awarded the 2016 Fellowship Grant in Painting by the Nevada Arts Council (NAC). He has worked on various exhibitions and projects with the Nevada Museum of Art, Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery, and UNLV Marjorie Barrick Museum, among others. — NNDA to feature county leaders Wednesday at Business Edge talk in Carson City. 7:30 a.m. The Northern Nevada Development Authority is beginning the new year by bringing county managers together for a morning talk about the present and future. The managers of Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey counties will provide an overview of their county. Their presentations will focus on county successes, challenges and plans for the future. NNDA’s The Business Edge will meet Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Casino Fandango, 3800 South Carson Street in Carson City. Carson City Soroptimist will honor five Girls of the Month during its Program Meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 23, noon until 1 p.m., at Glen Eagles Restaurant. This meeting is open to the public. The reservations deadline was Monday, Jan. 21. Girls of the Month are Carson City high school seniors selected by the Foundations Committee of Soroptimist International of Carson City (SICC) for exemplary academic achievement, participation in school activities, and community service. Many of these girls have overcome adversity to become leaders in their schools and our community.

— Basic Pottery Skills, 1 to 4 p.m. at Ogres-Holm Pottery. Studio manager, Lucas Lamont, introduces you to clay, in this 6-week open start class, designed to get you started with clay. The World Economic Forum is meeting this week in Davos, Switzerland, to discuss “Globalization 4.0,” an effort to “create a world of public-private partnerships that guide the free market to create economic growth, sustainability and social benefits, according to WEF’s founder and executive chairman, Klaus Schwab.” That quote comes from an information email from Climate Home News, a publication designed to inform readers about the urgency of responding to climate change warnings.

If you are skeptical about the disinterested nature of “public-private partnerships,” or indeed anything except Adam Smith’s “invisible hand” guiding the free market, you are not alone. Because there is a sameness to the messages from the elite who meet regularly in Davos to tell us how we should be living: it is they who will pull the strings on this so-called “partnership.” They want to be the “guides” who decide what energy source is allowable, how much development is sustainable, and what social programs and benefits are to be supported.

Climate change is not new, but it is a powerful rallying cry precisely because it is hard to measure. It is not that I disbelieve or doubt climate change; I am agnostic. That means I think the truth is unknowable regarding this issue. Here’s why.

To begin with, our earth is a gigantic system, and anyone who thinks they have found a way to measure global temperatures and their effect on climate is taking on an enormous responsibility. Like the six-year-old with the small tin bucket carrying seawater from the surf in the hope of draining the ocean, they have an imperfect appreciation of the scale of their task. Human beings are not good at scale: all too often they have the notion their gaze encompasses the whole scope of the problem. When discussing any global dynamic, they cannot see beyond the horizon. But they will tell you they can because the UN says so.

And they are ultimately left to make a lot of interpolations based on climate models dependent upon data points limited in time and location. All too often their data have proven to be inaccurate, or worse, dishonest.

The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report last year calling for a unified effort to limit temperature growth world-wide to less than three degrees Fahrenheit by the end of this century. Such a goal, the UN says, would require us all to stop using fossil fuels, a pretty common refrain by climate change people. And even they acknowledge the changes they call for will not apply to the two worst offenders: China and India.

Think about that for a moment – our betters would like us to give up coal, petroleum, and natural gas in the next generation. In its place they call for us to use renewable energy: solar, wind and geothermal, using a transmission grid that was designed for demand that peaks irrespective of the season, the height of the sun, or a whole new storage capability. In fact, the largest part of the storage they will count on is reverse transmission into the grid at peak production periods, an additional burden on existing distribution grids, whose managers will have little alternative but to pass the cost on to consumers.

And most revealing of all is that no one talks about nuclear power generation, by far the cleanest and historically safest available to us. But no, our betters (again) have determined, not based on demonstrated experience, that nuclear power generation is dangerous, probably because of the 1979 Jane Fonda movie ‘The China Syndrome’. Our worst experiences with nuclear energy – including Chernobyl -- have been remarkably tame compared with the scare scenarios we are exposed to from Hollywood.

Nor do analyses of the cost of alternative energy sources take into account the externalities of various alternatives. The cost of a wind turbine needs to include not only the cost of its production and installation, but also the environmental costs, raptor deaths, and ultimately demolition and recycling. Solar system costs need to include environmental costs of the mining, the concentration of sunlight or heat, or (again) the demolition. These are not insignificant costs, as I can attest from personal experience.

People who want us to believe they have the inside scoop on the relative cost of traditional and renewable energy like to overwhelm us with studies, statistics and reports from authorities like the UN. They seldom address the simple question qui bono? Who benefits from those studies and reports? Does the university publishing them, or the UN agency who reports the studies, stand to gain from the results if they are accepted? All too often, the answer is “yes”.

The question we should all be asking when someone tells us they know what is best for us is: “do they follow their own advice?” Reports out of Davos are that more than fifty chartered private jets have shown up bringing individual delegations to the world forum. Traveling in a private jet has just about the greatest environmental impact possible. It will be a lot easier to take environmentalists seriously when they themselves start acting like their message is serious.

— Muscle Powered Weekly Bike Ride, 9 a.m. Meet at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Road in Carson City, in the south parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Ride will normally consist of two loops which are 10-15 miles long each. The ride pace will vary depending on rider level, but will usually be about a 12-16 mph pace. This is a "no drop" ride so no one is left behind. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes. — Election reform advocate to be Carson City Democrats luncheon speaker. 11:30 a.m. Doug Goodman, founder of Nevadans for Election Reform, will be the featured speaker at Monday's luncheon sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee of Carson City. Goodman's group advocates for replacing primary elections with a ranked-choice system in which voters would select three candidates in order of preference. The candidate receiving the least votes would be eliminated from the count, with his or her preferences distributed to the other candidates, a process that would be repeated until one achieves a majority. This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, in the banquet room of Carson City's Round Table, on Retail Drive just off College Parkway.

Heidi Kratsch, Cooperative Extension horticulture specialist, said landscapers, nursery workers, groundskeepers and others in the green industry who attend the classes will learn science-based, sustainable horticulture practices to help them manage plants and landscapes efficiently and safely. 'Tell Me You Love Me' Romance Film Competition open for registration. Tell Me You Love Me Short Romance Film competition is now open for registration. Starting on Wednesday, Jan. 30, registered filmmakers will have exactly one week to conceive, write, produce and complete a short romance film that’s between 5- and 9-minutes long.
All of the films will be screened at a special dinner and screening event at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City on Valentine's Day. “We offer a great alternative to the usual Valentines Day activities; people can enjoy a nice catered dinner and watch some great films made by local filmmakers,” says Darla Bayer, the President of Wired Wednesday Digital Arts Association, the organization that runs this film competition and two others throughout the year. Volunteers and money donations to keep the Do Drop In doors open are always needed. Items will be collected now through March. Shop on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday shopping hours will be 9 a.m. to noon. Visit the sale days for great bargains; with most fabric starting at a dollar per yard. — Muscle Power Weekly Bike Ride, 9 a.m. Meet at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Road in Carson City, in the south parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Ride will normally consist of two loops which are 10-15 miles long each. The ride pace will vary depending on rider level, but will usually be about a 12-16 mph pace. This is a "no drop" ride so no one is left behind. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Legislature’s 120-day session begins on Monday, Feb. 4.

Rising above the persistent political turmoil and smallness of Democrats and the mainstream media, President Donald Trump Tuesday delivered a memorable State of the Union speech.

Forget the incessant whining and complaining of CNN, et al. that followed. Let’s focus on what he said.

He began by noting our “unlimited potential” as a country, and he told legislators he is ready to work with them to realize it: “We must govern not as two parties but as one nation.” So, from the start, he focused on the most important thing, especially in view of the nastiness and pettiness of politics this decade: America’s potential. And how to achieve it by working together.

Visionary and conciliatory. The ideal way to start in these troubled times.

He began by noting two great anniversaries that remind us of our unlimited potential and what we have done in the past when we worked together. First, he saluted three World War II veterans who participated in the 1944 D-Day landing in Europe to rescue the world from the fascist and socialist Axis powers. That drew a huge, enthusiastic standing ovation. Inspiring.

The second event was the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon. He introduced lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin and promised that this year Americans will be going back to space in American rockets.

Next, he directly appealed for compromise to promote the common good and break decades of political stalemate. “Tonight, I ask you to choose to make America great.”

His main theme was a plain-spoken and clear list of specific issues and policies. He noted that, despite the problems of the last decade, we have a strong economy on which to build. Unemployment is at its lowest in 50 years, with record low figures for African, Asian and Hispanic Americans. And five million Americans lifted off food stamps in recent years. Later, he noted 58 percent of last year’s newly created jobs went to women.

He pointed to the growth-inducing tax cuts and regulatory reforms that are major achievements of his administration. He noted we have become the world’s leading producers of oil and gas and a net exporter of oil for the first time in 65 years.

“The state of the union is strong. ... Our country is vibrant.” That’s as true as we make it.

He asked senators to confirm 300 qualified needed nominees the Democrats have held in limbo.

He praised the ground-breaking criminal justice reform First Step Act the administration and congress passed by working together. He recognized two good people who benefited from it.

Then he turned to the many burdens of illegal immigration, saying providing safety and security to Americans from the minority of dangerous illegal aliens is a moral issue. He recognized the heirs of the Jerry and Sherri David of Reno, recently murdered by an illegal alien. He celebrated the legal immigrants who enrich our nation and strengthen our society and challenged congress to act on the issue in the next ten days.

Mr. Trump saluted the brave men and women of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau and promised walls and see-through steel barriers will be built where they are needed. What he rightly called a common-sense solution.

Although I have reservations about his tariff wars, he extended an olive branch to China in this regard and offered other constructive trade initiatives.

Promising efforts to lower the cost of health care and protect people with pre-existing conditions, he again reached out to the Democrats.

Recognizing the needs for real solutions in education, he promised school choice for American children. He challenged us to build a culture that cherishes and protects innocent life. He noted foreign affairs progress, especially in Venezuela. And he promised, “America will never be a socialist country.”

In the end, he returned to the D-Day heroes, noting one of them later helped liberate the Dachau concentration camp, including a survivor seated next to him. He denounced the vile poison of anti-Semitism and celebrated moving our Israel embassy to Jerusalem.

He closed by again inviting the Democrats to work in bi-partisan cooperation with Republicans and his administration so our most thrilling achievements are still ahead. Just right.
